Fire erupted in engine room of Norwegian trawler LANGENES in the afternoon Sep 11, some 80 nm west of Rogaland, Stavanger area, Norway, North sea. CO2 firefighting system was activated, fire said to be suppressed, though as of 1600 UTC situation wasn’t yet clear. 14 crew were airlifted to safety by helicopter, 6 remained on board and continued fighting fire. 1 or 2 ships are deployed in salvage.

General cargo ship ARKLOW RESOLVE suffered engine failure at around 1000 UTC Sep 11 in Kattegat of Gothenburg, Sweden, shortly after leaving Gothenburg, bound for Spain. Swedish maritime authorities decided to tow the ship to safety by CG SAR ships KBV 001 and KBV 316. She was towed to Hono waters, off Gothenburg, and brought to anchor at around 0500 UTC Sep 12.

Freighters collided in Brunsbuettel

General cargo ships TINA and GUNDEM MAKBULE collided on Sep 12 in or near Northern Lock, Brunsbuettel, Kiel Canal, both completing southbound transit. According to AIS track ships collided or had a contact at around 0300 UTC while entering Northern Lock. Both ships sustained slight damages above waterline, and were allowed to continue their voyages. As of 1000 UTC Sep 12, TINA was already docked at her port of destination Hamburg, GUNDEM MAKBULE was in North sea under way, bound for Greece.

Fire erupted in engine room of trawler KAPITAN BOGOMOLOV at 1005 Moscow time Sep 11, when trawler was moored alongside reefer SARONIC BREEZE (IMO 9041540) at Dakhla Anchorage, Morocco. Fire was extinguished by crew by 1100, two crew died in fire fighting. Extent of damages unknown.

Container ship PRIAMOS ran aground shortly after leaving Kotka, Finland, Gulf of Finland, at around 1600 UTC Sep 12, and was refloated in about an hour with the help of tug or tugs. She was taken back to port and berthed, for check and investigation. Cause of grounding unknown, and though there was a strong wind in the area at the time of grounding, authorities don’t exclude possible mechanical failure or human error. No leak reported, no information on damages, if any.

Container ship MED DENIZLI suffered engine failure at around 2100 UTC Sep 12 in front of Canakkale, while transiting Dardanelles in western direction, en route from Tekirdag Turkey Marmara sea to Izmir Turkey. The ship started to drift, was taken under control with tug assistance, probably anchored, resumed sailing after crew fixed engine at around 2200 UTC.

The ship was proceeding at low speed of some 4 knots, until she went NUC at around 2100 UTC, and started to drift in the area between Kythnos and Syros islands. Tug APOLLON (IMO 7431806) took her on tow early in the morning Sep 13, she’s to be towed, reportedly, to port of destination.

General cargo ship SORMOVSKIY-123, loaded with 3201 tons of wheat, ran aground in river Don estuary while proceeding downstream, to Azov-Don Sea Channel, at 0025 Moscow time Sep 13. The ship strayed off fairway while sailing in dense fog bank. As of 1700 Moscow time Sep 13, SORMOVSKIY-123 was still aground, with no tug in sight.

Livestock carrier sparked anthrax fears, Turkey

Livestock carrier RAHMEH had to shelter at Cesme anchorage, Turkey, Aegean sea, on Sep 13, to fix mechanical problem, which requires spare parts to be delivered on board. The ship is ballasting from Istanbul to Gibraltar. There were fears among local residents, because during her previous voyage with livestock from Brazil to Turkey, some animals were found to be infected with anthrax, RAHMEH was under quarantine in Turkish waters for quite some time. Authorities had to issue official statement, assuring people that there’s no bio danger, and that the ship and the crew will undergo health inspection.

Ferry fire, 10 dead 8 missing, Indonesia

Ferry KM FUNGKA PERMATA V on Sep 14 caught fire, burned out and sank in position 02 00S 123 22E south of Banggai island, east of Central Sulawesi, Banda sea, while en route from Baubau, southeast Sulawesi, to North Maluku island. 126 people including 11 crew were rescued, at least 10 died, 8 still missing. There’s a confusion as to total number of people on board – it is said, that there were 146 passengers and 12 crew, but only 91 passengers are listed in manifest.
No data found on KM FUNGKA PERMATA V, ferry isn’t recorded in known international databases. From the looks of her, she was a wooden ship with ro-ro capacity.

VLCC superstructure sank off Ulsan

Superstructure block of VLCC under construction at Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipyard in Ulsan slipped off 3680-ton barge and sank in Ulsan waters in the afternoon Sep 15. Barge under tow of a tug was approaching Shipyard, when 60-meter long, 38-meters high structure, weighing 917 tons, went overboard and sank.

Two port workers suffocated to death in chip carrier hold

Two port workers suffocated in hold of wood chips carrier UNI FORTUNE, docked at Quy Nhon port, central Vietnam, early in the morning Sep 16. They fainted and fell into hold, other workers didn’t dare to go down to assist, both injured workers were recovered by rescuers about an hour after alert was raised, and were found to be dead.

Offshore support ship HAI YANG SHI YOU 202 with 73 personnel on board, anchored west of Dalajia Island, Huizhou, northeast of Hong Kong, reported anchor dragging, drifting towards island rocky coast, at around 1500 LT Sep 16. Shenzhen MRCC sent SAR ships to assist, situation was taken under control. She was towed west to safer waters of Dapeng'ao, Shenzhen. Photo courtesy of Guangdong Maritime Bureau. Judging from photo, HAI YANG SHI YOU 202 was as good as aground.
