Livestock carrier BRITTA K with 810 cattle and 263 sheep on board suffered engine failure on Aug 31 in Balearic sea while en route from Sete France to Beirut Lebanon. Tug AILETTE (IMO:8104216) towed BRITTA K to Ajaccio anchorage, Corsica, where she was anchored on Sep 2. As of morning Sep 4, the ship remained anchored, awaiting inspection and permission to continue voyage.

Update: Tanker was beached as can be seen on video, under the name KAIYU 2, most probably it’s product tanker KAIYU NO.2 (IMO 9016129, dwt 648, built 1990, flag Japan). Pusher tug with barge saddled mole, tug not identified yet. And finally, havoc in Osaka port, container terminal.
Product tanker HOUN MARU was anchored south of Osaka Intl Airport link bridge, dragged anchor at around midday, Tokyo time, Sep 4, when typhoon JEBI struck Osaka Bay. The ship drifted onto bridge and was battered against bridge by gale-force wind and waves. Both bridge and tanker were severely damaged, tanker is disabled, reportedly engine room flooded or experiencing water ingress. As of 1800 Tokyo time, situation didn’t change much – tanker being still stuck in the bridge, 11 crew not yet evacuated. Tanker said to be loaded with kerosene, no confirmed information on leak yet. Tug is trying to approach tanker or give in tow line, according to AIS track.

General cargo ship ARSLANBEY ran aground at around 2000 UTC Sep 4 on Kanatadika coast, northern Evia island, Greece, while en route from Amaliapoli mainland Greece to Istanbul. According to track, the ship didn’t turn portside as it should, and continued sailing straight ahead, until she ran onto coast or coastal shallows, at her cruising speed, so she may be hard aground. Obviously, it’s a navigational error, cause unknown.

Passenger ro-ro ship VESTA suffered fire in batteries compartment in the morning Sep 5 at Palermo Ship Repair Yard, where ferry was undergoing maintenance works. 5 engines were engaged in firefighting, fire was localized and extinguished. Ni injures reported, no information on damages.

At 0115 LT Sep 5 barge MP3297 broke off mooring and allided with berthed ro-ro cargo ship ZAPOLYARNYY in Dudinka port, Russian Arctic. Barge remained intact, ZAPOLYARNYY sustained dents in stern quarters area.

USA-flagged car carrier collided with port tug at Bremerhaven Germany in the afternoon Sep 4, according to police official statement, made on Sep 6. Two tugs were assisting car carrier to dock, when a third suddenly made a sharp move and struck car carrier in bow section. Tug suffered serious damages, car carrier hull was breached above waterline. One of tug crew was injured and had to be hospitalized. Car carrier wasn’t identified. According to AIS, it’s HONOR, ship arrived at Bremerhaven on Sep 4, as of afternoon Sep 6 was still in port.

Maritime Bulletin was informed by one of website visitors on an accident at Shuwaikh port, Kuwait, which he witnessed on Sep 5. Container ship MSC CHIARA was offloading containers by its’ own cranes, one of container fell on berth because of crane failure, and crushed another, already offloaded, container. Both containers, from the look of them, were severely damaged.

Sep 7 Update: As of Sep 7, WAN HAI 502 is still aground, salvage under way. The ship has to be lightered, operation hampered by adverse weather. No leak reported yet, but it’s highly probable, considering grounding site, reef, and circumstances – the ship ran on reef while sailing full speed. According to chart, there was enough depth for safe navigation. The ship ran aground at around 2200 LT Aug 30.
Sep 3: Container ship WAN HAI 502 aground in South China Sea in position 01 13S 106 50E, Karimata Strait, since late Aug 30 or early Aug 31. Reportedly she’s hard aground, salvage company not nominated yet. WAN HAI 502 is en route from Singapore to Jakarta.

Cargo ship WAN TONG 158 ran aground on the reef early in the morning Sep 7 1 nm south of Chiyu island, off Shantou, Guangdong, China, South China sea, while en route from Pingtan to Guanzhou. Reportedly, fore hull or bow, damaged and breached, no information on leak or character of cargo on board. Rescue ship already deployed, salvage supervised by Shantou Rescue Bureau. Cruise ship STAR PRIDE reported being disabled after loss of power to USCG at around 1920 UTC Sep 7 in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, USA. The crew brought STAR PRIDE to anchor outside channel. It was decided to take her to Newport for inspection, while reportedly, power was already regained by 2100 UTC. As of 0300 UTC Sep 8, the ship, escorted by or under tow, of two tugs, was approaching Newport. She’s to resumed voyage after inspection at Newport.

Update: All 7 crew were rescued by a cargo ship, at around 1130 Moscow time. Tug couldn’t hold against waves because of steering failure.
Port tug SQUALL reported sinking at 0655 Moscow time Sep 8 in Kerch Strait, about 2 nm south of Kerch Bridge, 7 crew went into life raft. Tug was caught in rough weather, most probably couldn’t hold against waves, and was flooded. As of 1130 Moscow time, tug Mercury, deployed in SAR, spotted raft but can’t approach it because of high waves.

Floating crane, anchored off Kerch Bridge, Kerch Strait, caught in storm raging in the area, dragged anchors and drifted onto Kerch (Krym) Bridge at 0620 Moscow time Sep 8. Crane allided with pier No. 227 of car bridge, bridge sustained damages, car traffick restricted. Tug managed to take crane on tow at 0830 Moscow time, and tow it to safe distance from the bridge.

Bulk carrier PETRA STAR dragged anchor and drifted onto anchored bulk carrier INCE HAMBURG in stormy weather conditions on Kavkaz Port Anchorage, Kerch Strait, understood on Sep 8. Both ships reportedly sustained damages. Turkish bulk carrier remained at her anchorage position, Russian bulk carrier PETRA STAR was relocated and anchored off Crimea coast in Kerch Strait.

Indonesian research ship TRINITY EXPLORER was disabled and developed portside list in the morning Sep 9 off Tainan city coast, southwest Taiwan, while sailing along Taiwan coast in southern direction, in rough weather conditions. The ship issued distress signal and requested assistance. SAR boat or boats were deployed, 18 crew went into SAR boats, 16 remained on board and managed to take the ship to Tainan harbor, where she was docked in the afternoon same day. It isn’t known if she reached port under own power, or was towed.

Crane at CSSC Guangzhou Huangpu Shipyard collapsed on Sep 8, killing 2 and injuring 1 worker. Collapsed crane also damaged Navy Auxiliary ship under construction at Guangzhou Huangpu Shipyard, the biggest shipbuilding facility in South China, deeply engaged in China’s Navy buildup. Official statement already claimed, that the newbuild’s damages were slight, adding that one of killed workers died in an attempt to save valuable equipment.

General cargo ship FEOFAN SHOKHIREV allided with anchored general cargo ship VOLGO-DON 5088 in Azov port area, river Don, Azov sea, Russia, while proceeding upstream, on Sep 10. VOLGO-DON 5088 suffered hull breach and cargo deck bloating of some 1.5 meters diameter. FEOFAN SHOKHIREV sustained bow stern dent. As of Sep 11, both ships were anchored at Azov port anchorage.

Brand-new luxury yacht KANGA, delivered to her owner in summer this year, and believed to become a star at September Monaco and Cannes boat show, caught fire in the morning Sep 9 while being anchored off Dubrovnik, Croatia, Adriatic sea. 13 people on board were evacuated, all are safe. Firefighters finally, took fire under control, and brought her to Prapanto port, near Dubrovnik. Superstructure was destroyed by fire, the hull heavily damaged. Cause of fire unknown.
