7 ships including container ships and tanker grounded by storm, Taiwan

According to Taiwan Maritime and Ports Bureau, three more ships were grounded by storm in the morning Aug 23 near Kaohsiung, Taiwan:
Container ship JIN HUA was grounded and as of 0500 UTC Aug 24, is still aground, north of Kaohsiung, in Tainan city area.
Container ship UNLIMITED 2 was grounded and as of 0500 UTC Aug 24, is still aground, north of Kaohsiung, halway between Kaohsiung and Tainan.
Product tanker DRAGONARIA was grounded and as of 0500 UTC Aug 24 is still aground, on Kaohsiung southern mole, at port’s entrance.

Emergency meeting was set to take place on Aug 24, to work out and implement salvage plans, for each grounded ship.

In total, 7 ships are aground as of morning Aug 24:
Container ship JIN HUA; Container ship UNLIMITED 2; Product tanker DRAGONARIA; General cargo ship TAI CANG HU 1 (IMO 9142423); General cargo ship AN LI 669 (IMO 8794827); General cargo ship SHUN HONG (IMO 8748232); General cargo ship CHANG LONG 68 (IMO 8793744).

Oceanic trawler disabled by fire, Chief Engineer died

Fire erupted in engine room of trawler PAVEL KUTAKHOV at 1615 LT Aug 23 in North Atlantic off Greenland, while the ship was moving on guest-rope from tanker NORDSTRAUM (IMO 9036284), probably taking fuel from tanker. Fire fighting system was activated, by 0300 Aug 24 fire was extinguished. PAVEL KUTAKHOV is disabled, trawler KAPITAN DEMIDENKO (IMO 8907137) directed to assist.
During firefighting, Chief Engineer died, circumstances unknown.

Cruise research ship AKADEMIK IOFFE aground in Canadian Arctic Update refloated

Aug 25 Update: AKADEMIK IOFFE was refloated sometime around 0600 UTC Aug 25, moved to deeper waters, and as of 1300 UTC, stopped or anchored near grounding site, probably for hull inspection.

Passenger ship AKADEMIK IOFFE ran aground in the morning Aug 24 in position 69 43N 91 21W, near Kugaaruk, Nunavut, Gulf of Boothia, Canadian Arctic Archipelago, being on a cruise in Arctic. There’s no immediate danger, reportedly hull is intact, with no breaches, no leaks. Two Canadian icebreakers directed to assist.
AKADEMIK IOFFE is initially, a research ship with ice-strengthened hull, built for oceanic research worldwide, including Arctic waters.

Yacht sank in North sea, 11 people rescued

Sailing yacht SVARTLOGA sank at night Aug 25 off IJmuiden, Netherlands. 11 people on board, including 5 men and 6 women, went into life raft and were rescued by KNRM (Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution) IJmuiden rescue boat. They were taken to IJmuiden, all are safe.
SVARTLOGA left Aarhus for a long journey in the Atlantic, the yacht was to sail through European, West African, Caribbean and North American waters, under the command of her skipper and owner, Mr. Henrik Gronborg. Bulk carrier GDF SUEZ NORTH SEAwas disabled and drifting since Aug 16, initial Alert:
Aug 20 Alert: GDF SUEZ NORTH SEA, IMO 9624031, dwt 55848, North Atlantic off US – NUC since Aug 16, en route from Spain to US East Coast, ETA Aug 17.
The crew failed to fix the problem by own means, and reported situation to USCG on Aug 23, owner contracted tug ATLANTIC SALVOR (IMO 7719624), towage commenced on Aug 24, on Aug 26 bulk carrier reached New York and was safely berthed. Photo USCG.

Tanker troubled in Humber estuary

Product tanker NORDIC SUND suffered mechanical failure at around 0200 UTC Aug 27 in Humber river estuary, southeast of Hull, UK, while en route from Kingston to Southampton UK. According to AIS track, tanker resumed sailing, but not for long, at around 0600 UTC she turned starboard and dropped speed, stopped northeast of Haile Sand Fort lighthouse. As of 1500 UTC she was marked as “Stopped” with tug SVITZER VALIANT nearby.

Ferry fire, some 900 passengers ready to be evacuated, Greece Video

Fire erupted in reportedly, car deck of ferry EL. VENZELOS with 875 passengers and 141 crew on board some 30 nm off Piraeus, early in the morning Aug 29. The ship was en route from Piraeus to Chania, but had to turn back and returned to Piraeus, where she was moored at around 0100 UTC Aug 29. Fire was said to be extinguished, vehicle caught fire, firefighting system was activated. Reportedly all passengers were gathered on lifeboat deck, and remain there, some sources say there’s no risk and no need for evacuation. Passengers already shared their ordeal via social nets, describing something of a panic. As of 0230 UTC it wasn’t yet known, if passengers are to be evacuated, or stay on board. Understood there’s no damage, only smoke and burn smell.

Tanker collided with pier, terminal partially closed

Product tanker MEGANISI collided with pier at Jose Terminal Venezuela, on a weekend Aug 25-26, understood while mooring, on arrival from the US with cargo of naphtha. One of three main piers of Jose refinery was damaged and closed. No information on tanker’s damages.

HAPAG-LLOYD press-release Aug 24:
Asia – South America East Coast Service (ASE) - MV COSCO Shipping Thames V.6E Fire on Hold
We regret to inform you that on August 23, 2018 a dense smoke was detected in hold number 4 of MV “COSCO Shipping Thames” voyage 6E. The crew activated the fire extinguisher system and now the fire is under control.
It is unclear at this time whether cargo has been affected. Currently, vessel’s ETA at Singapore is August 24, 2018.

According to AIS records, the ship at the time of fire was in Malacca Strait, she reduced speed or stopped, then resumed sailing and reached Singapore anchorage in the morning Aug 24. She was berthed on Aug 25 at Tanjong Pagar Terminal, understood after safety check while at anchor. As of Aug 29, the ship was still docked in Singapore, no information on cargo and/or ship’s damages.

Bulk carrier VELA maimed by dropped anchor in Arabian sea

Bulk carrier VELA portside anchor with all 330-meters long cable inadvertently dropped on Aug 11, according to ship’s track, when the ship was in Maldives area, Indian ocean, en route from Singapore to Damietta. Anchor and chain weren’t lost, they remained dangling in the water, making the ship hampered both in speed, down to 3-6 knots, and in maneuverability. VELA limped through Arabian sea and most of Gulf of Aden, until Indian Navy ship INS TEG came to assist, and sent an emergency team. By joint efforts, anchor and chain were recovered and secured on Aug 28, north of Djibouti. Bulk carrier resumed her voyage.

​ Bulk carrier BONA interrupted voyage after 2 crew injured by wave

Bulk carrier BONA had to interrupt her voyage from Richards Bay to Rotterdam on Aug 28, after two crew were badly injured. The ship turned to Port Elizabeth, both crew were medevaced by NSRI Port Elizabeth rescue craft Spirit of Toft, and delivered to hospital http://www.nsri.org.za/2018/08/two-patients-evacuated-off-a-ship-at-sea/

They sustained injures after being caught by wave, and trown onto deck constructions. Medevac was directed by MRCC. Bulk carrier resumed her voyage.

Ghost container ship aground

Container ship SAM RATULANGI was reported aground some 7 nm off Thongwa, Gulf of Mataban, Myanmar, on Aug 30, wrote The Irrawaddy. According to Myanmar Maritime Authorities, the ship ran aground 3 days earlier, on Aug 27. The ship is derelict, there’s no cargo, also. Officials believe she was under tow and broke off towline. She was already unmanned when under tow, or crew abandoned her after towage failure. Latest available AIS records dated 2009. Most probably she was under tow to break yard.

Philippine Navy frigate grounding, Spratly Islands

Philippine Navy frigate BRP Gregorio del Pilar ran aground at night Aug 29 in South China sea, near Half Moon Shoal, eastern Spratly Archipelago. As of Aug 31, the ship is reportedly, still aground, probably refloating already under way. According to Navy officials, there’s no water ingress or fuel leak.

Ferry breached in collision, Oran port Update Chinese ship damaged

Update: According to latest information, ferry struck berthed Panama-flagged cargo ship, most probably it’s general cargo ship HAN XIN. It was said, that the cargo ship suffered heavy damages, but this information is not yet confirmed.

Ferry TASSILI II reportedly collided with Chinese cargo ship, while leaving port of Oran, Algeria, bound for Alicante, Spain, early in the morning Sep 1. Ferry sustained starboard hull breach, said to be several meters long, but was according to officials, stabilized and berthed. Passengers were disembarked. Cargo ship wasn’t identified, it was mentioned only, that both ships were under way in harbor at the time of collision.

Two tanker crew poisoned by poisonous gas, one died another critical

Product tanker KEY FIGHTER requested medical assistance at 0430 LT Sep 1 in position north of Maloy, Norway, while en route from Averoy to Maloy, with cargo of rapeseed oil. Two crew were badly injured by exposing to hydrogen sulfide while working in tank – understood cargo tank. Both lost conscience and were recovered from tank by other crew, both airlifted by helicopter to be transferred to Alesund. One of them died, another is in critical condition. Tanker docked at Maloy at around 0500 UTC.

Ferry on fire, passengers evacuated, Philippines

Ferry LCT LITE FERRY 28 caught fire while approaching Taloot Wharf, Argao, southeast Cebu, on arrival from Tagbilaran, Bohol, in the morning Sep 2. The ship with 97 passengers and 27 crew was some 300 meters from pier, when fire erupted, probably on cargo deck. Some sources say all passengers and crew were evacuated, but some say crew or part of it remain on board to fight fire.

Sep 4: Was refloated at around 2300 UTC Sep 3, taken to anchorage Ensenada for check. As of 0630 UTC Sep 4, was in the same position. No news on damages yet.
Sep 2: Bulk carrier KANCHANA NAREE confirmed aground since 0640 UTC Sep 2 in Rio De la Plata off Buenos Aires. Bulk carrier en route from San Martin Argentina to Las Palmas.

General cargo ship STAR LIBERTY ran aground off port of San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, Panay island, central Philippines, in the morning Sep 3. The ship loaded with cement and construction materials arrived from Cebu. 22 people on board (maybe crew and passengers) abandoned the ship, all safe. No information on salvage.

Cruise ship COSTA DIADEMA while leaving Savona Italy on Sep 3, and maneuvering in harbor, caused broken mooring line of berthed bulk carrier GUARDIANSHIP, which subsequently, struck pier, inflicting some damages. No other information available.
