Small freighter grounded by storm, Philippines

General cargo ship JERLYN LILY ran aground at around 1200 LT Aug 12 in Legaspi City area, southeast Luzon, Philippines. The ship loaded with copra, with 18 crew on board, was reportedly, driven ashore by stormy weather. No other information available yet.

Tanker drifted onto bridge, heavy damages

A cargo ship drifted onto pedestrian bridge to Santay island, Guayaquil, Ecuador, in the evening Aug 11, inflicting heavy damages on bridge’s constructions. The ship wasn’t identified and isn’t tracked by AIS. It is said, that she was moored at Adelca, Duran. From the looks of her, it’s a tanker, obviously in lay-up or abandoned. She’s moored to dolphins and at anchor.

Tug with loaded barge in trouble, sheltered, Brazil

Push tug NORSUL RIO with barge NORSUL ran into trouble on Aug 11, after barge, loaded with 8000 tons of steel coils, developed heavy list, while en route from Portocel Brazil to Sao Francisco Do Sul, Brazil. Voyage was interrupted, convoy headed for shelter and anchored at Armacao Dos Buzios, east of Rio de Janeiro. As of 0500 UTC Aug 13, caravan was in the same position. Container ship MSC CHLOE lost 13 containers, 25 damaged

Container ship MSC CHLOE lost 13 40’ containers some 22 nm ESE of Durban, South Africa in vicinity 30 03S 031 26E, at around 2330 LT (UTC +2) Aug 7, said South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) on Aug 13 in official statement. The ship was drifting off Durban, awaiting the berth, on arrival from Port Elizabeth, and was caught in huge swell, rolling some 30 degrees both sides. 13 containers went overboard, 25 containers on board were damaged. Navigational warning was issued on floating containers, threatening ships sailing in the area. Some of containers which were lost were loaded with citrus fruits. MSC CHLOE docked at Durban on Aug 9, and as of Aug 13 was still in Durban.

Near miss in Bosphorus Strait after bulk carrier went NUC Video

Bulk carrier HAZAR went NUC after reportedly, steering failure, in the morning Aug 13 in Bosphorus, while transiting Strait in southern direction, en route from Constanta Romania to Livorno Italy, right below Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. The ship narrowly escaped hitting one of the famous historical mansions on Strait’s embankment, by dropping her anchors and probably, reversing engine to full astern. Shortly after full stop, the ship resumed moving under own power, made a loop and safely completed transit. She was brought to anchor at anchorage in Marmara sea. As of 1330 UTC, bulk carrier was still at anchor.

Aug 14 Update: Grounding confirmed – the ship veered off fairway after rudder failure, tugs are expected to arrive on the site on Aug 14. No leak reported, no news on damages.

Aug 13: General cargo ship UMIAVUT is aground in St. Lawrence upstream from Trois-Rivieres since Aug 12. The ship is en route from Churchill to Valleyfield, Canada. Ship’s position is outside fairway in shallow waters. No tugs visible nearby, no news on a grounded ship in Great Lakes shipping-related sources.

Aug 14 Update: On Aug 13 was towed back to Tenerife, reportedly with mechanical failure. As of afternoon Aug 14 was berthed in Tenerife, most probably under repairs.
Aug 12: REPULSE BAY (ex-CRUX J), IMO 9238698, dwt 16824, Canary Islands off Santa Cruz de Tenerife – NUC, adrift since 2130 UTC Aug 11, shortly after leaving Tenerife, bound for Algeciras Spain, ETA Aug 13.

Supertanker on fire, Gulf of Oman

Update: According to latest news, 3 crew are missing, 1 medevaced with burns. It is said, that that there was an explosion, which comes as no surprise, considering, that cargo tanks are empty – i.e. most probably gas in cargo tank or tanks exploded. Understood 3 missing crew didn’t jump overboard, but were thrown into water by explosion. SCI issued a statement saying that the fire in cargo tank has been subdued, salvage tug awaited to cool tanks.

VLCC DESH VAIBHAV reported fire on board at around 0900 LT Aug 14 northeast of Muscat, Oman, while en route from India to Fujairah UAE, so she’s in ballast. Four crew understood, panicked, jumped overboard and went missing, SAR under way with several merchant and Navy ships deployed. The ship’s status is Not Under Command, no other information available at the moment. As of 1300 UTC Aug 14 tanker was NUC, seemingly drifting in northern direction.

Dutch freighter collided with pier at Ceuta, damaged

General cargo ship MANISA CAMILLA struck with her bow Heliport pier while docking at Ceuta with assistance of two tugs, at around 1130 UTC Aug 14. Pier was damaged, the ship suffered portside bow breach above waterline, see photos, video. MANISA CAMILLA arrived at Ceuta from Sevilla. Accident reportedly was caused by engine failure of one of the tugs and ensuing inability to control MANISA CAMILLA inertia.

Turkish freighter fire, 1 crew died, ship under tow

Fire erupted on board of Turkish general cargo ship KARADENIZ 5 shortly after midnight LT (UTC +3) Aug 15, when the ship was abeam of Krapets, Bulgaria, north of Varna, en route from Romania to Turkey. One crew said to die, the ship disabled and taken on tow to be towed to Varna. No other information available. Latest AIS timed 2330 UTC Aug 14, no signals since that time.

Ferry sank in Indonesia, all 42 people on board lost or missing

Ferry KMP BANDENG sailed from Tobelo, North Maluku island, bound for Bitung, eastern North Sulawesi, Indonesia, in the evening LT Aug 14, with 24 passengers, 18 crew and 16 vehicles on board. At the time of departure, weather was fine. In the morning Aug 15 ferry contacted authorities and asked permission to turn back, because of deteriorating weather. Several hours after that, contact with ship was lost. Later it was reported, that the ship suffered engine failure, has been disabled, and sank being caught in heavy swell, in the afternoon Aug 15. All 42 people on board are missing or drowned, according to latest updates. Ferry sank off Loloda, West Halmahera, North Maluku. Locals are already collecting bodies of drowned passengers and crew.

General cargo ship MEKHANIK KOTTSOV with 3903 cubic meters of timber on board, bound for Saint-Malo, France, ran aground at 0006 Moscow time Aug 16 at Onega port entrance, northwest Russia, White sea, while leaving port with pilot on board. Tug was sent to assist, no information on further development, no information on damages. The ship strayed off fairway after engine failure.

Fire on board of Russian freighter, Arkhangelsk

Fire erupted in one of crew cabins of general cargo ship YAMAL IRBIS, docked at Ekonomia area of Arkhangelsk port, northwest Russia, White sea, at around 1530 Moscow time Aug 15. Several fire engines were deployed, fire was soon extinguished. 12-sq.meter cabin burned out, two neighbouring cabins sustained some damages. No injures reported. As of 1630 UTC Aug 16, the ship was in the same position in Arkhangelsk.

Ferry ANDROS JET with 46 passengers on board ran aground in Gavrio Harbor, Andros island, Greece, at around 0800 UTC Aug 17, while maneuvering in harbor. Passengers were taken to port, as of 1400 UTC ferry according to AIS, is still aground. She was to be surveyed by divers prior to refloating. No reports on damages, bottom at grounding site said to be sandy.

Product tanker VOLGONEFT-165 with 4639 tons of diesel fuel on board ran aground in river Volga in Astrakhan Region area at around 1200 Moscow time Aug 18, while proceeding upstream en route from Turkmenbashi Turkmenistan, Caspian sea, to Georgia, Black sea, via Rostov-on-Don. No damages, no leak reported. Tug is to be contracted for refloating.

Aug 18: Disabled after fire VLCC was finally, towed to Tokyo Bay and moored, offloading to commence today. Not clear why did Japan Salvage tow tanker around for such a long time.
Aug 11 Update: VLCC FRONT HAKATA is still at sea reportedly under tow, though no tug visible nearby, moving or drifting in eastern direction at 1-3 knots speed. No information as to why and what’s next.

Four Albanian crew of a general cargo ship KRISTI I were taken to hospital at Ravenna, Italy, shortly after ship’s arrival on Aug 20, with poisoning symptoms. Poisoning believed to be caused by cargo fumigation. The ship arrived from Split Croatia with cargo of grain.

Supertanker FRONT HAKATA under tow, destination China, dodging typhoons

Aug 22: FRONT HAKATA is under tow since Aug 20, port of destination Zhoushan-Ningbo, East China sea, ETA Aug 30. It is not clear, whether tanker was offloaded during her 48-hours stay at Tokyo Bay. She’s towed by offshore tug AKATSUKI (IMO 9728966), sailing in WSW direction at some 4-6 knots speed. Probably, such a wide berth to Japan islands is explained by typhoon SOULIK, raging in East China sea, and typhoon MARON, approaching southern Japan from southeast. Tanker presently, is reported as “disabled after engine failure”.

Five general cargo ships grounded by storm, Kaohsiung

Five general cargo ships were beached by storm early in the morning Aug 23 along Kaohsiung beaches, TAI CANG HU 1 and AN LI 669 are aground to the south of Kaohsiung entrance, and SHUN HONG (IMO 8748232), CHANG LONG 68 and FLYING DRAGON (Call sign Q9L5D) are aground to the north. There are 66 crew on board of grounded ships, they’re said to be relatively safe, Coast Guard helicopters are on standby to evacuate the crews if situation worsens. No salvage possible until weather improvement.
