Container ship HYUNDAY VANCOUVER reportedly collided or contacted with fishing vessel while leaving Incheon, Korea, at around 0340-0400 LT Sep 22. Understood there wasn’t any serious damage sustained either by container ship, or fishing vessel. No news from Korea with regards to this accident, initial information has been provided by the insider. AIS track confirms mishap – there were sudden maneuver tracked, and loss of speed.

Container ship MSC ILONA under tow, Arabian sea

Container ship MSC ILONA was spotted as adrift, probably disabled, on Sep 18 in Arabian sea off Oman coast, some 350 nm southeast of port of destination Salalah. According to AIS track, on Sep 24 MSC ILONA was taken on tow by offshore supply tug AQUILA (IMO 8714891), to be towed to Salalah. As of 0600 UTC Sep 26, caravan was some 480 nm almost due east from Salalah (MSC ILONA drifted more than 200 in northeast direction since Sep 17), moving towards Salalah at some 3 knots speed, ETA Oct 1. No information on character of trouble – it may be anything from mechanical failure to a fire.

Ferry hard on rocks, 87 passengers injured, Philippines

Ferry MARIA MATILDE ran aground on rocks at around 0430 LT Sep 26, on a coast in Calatrava City area, northern Tablas Island, Tablas Strait, Philippines. Ferry was en route from Odiongan port, southeast Tablas, to Romblon Island, with 2151 passengers and vehicles on board. 87 passengers reported injured, all those requiring medical assistance were taken to nearby hospitals. Officials said grounding was caused by restricted by heavy rain visibility, but passengers statements contradict official version. As of 1400 UTC Sep 26, status and condition of MARIA MATILDE are unknown. According to a CNN photo and description of an accident, ferry ran onto coast and hit a cliff.

Dredger ELEFANTAS sank in Athens suburbs

Dredger ELEFANTAS suffered water ingress in the afternoon Sep 25 in at Aspropyrgos, Gulf of Elefsina, Athens suburb, Greece. Vessel was moored to another, berthed vessel. ELEFANTAS sank, resting on bottom on even keel, partially above the water. Vessel was fenced off by booms to prevent possible leak, owner contacted and requested wreck removal. Seems like vessel was in a lay-up for quite some time.

CMA CGM very large container ship disabled during sea trials, caught in storm

Very large container ship CMA CGM LISA MARIE suffered mechanical failure during sea trials on Sep 20 some 130 nm east of Shanghai, with 164 people on board, mostly shipyard teams. Giant ship was caught in adverse weather with up to 6.4 meters high waves. SAR ship DONGHAIJIU117 (IMO 9682631) was sent to assist, managing to take disabled CMA CGM LISA MARIE on tow and tow her to Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard, where she was berthed. General cargo vessel WEN PENG suffered engine failure at around 1000 Tokyo time Sep 28 in Japan sea southwest from Niigata, Honshu, and went adrift. As of 1600 Tokyo time, vessel was still adrift off southern Sadi island coast. WEN PENG is en route from Busan Korea to Japan.

Reefer senior officers detained after oil leak, Piraeus

Greek Coast Guard detained Master and Chief Engineer of reefer ICE GLACIER ON Sep 27 in Piraeus, for an oil leak, which occurred during bunkering operation. Small amount of heavy fuel leaked from vent pipe into deck, some of it leaked overboard, making some 70 sq meters stain in water. Master of the ship immediately informed authorities about the leak, crew took all required measures to contain and clean up leaked fuel. Private company was contracted for a clean-up operation. Authorities requested from ship’s manager letter of guarantee to cover pending fine. Understood Master and Chief Engineer were released, ICE GLACIER left Piraeus on Sep 28, bound for Turkey.

Antique ship on fire, San Diego

Fire erupted in superstructure of fishing research ship NORTON SOUND, docked at San Diego near Seaport Village, in the morning Sep 29, report local media. According to latest updates, there were no people on board and so far, one firefighter was treated for overheat, no other injures reported. Fire was said to be still raging as of evening Sep 29, with open fire burning out and smoldering still going on. NORTON SOUND is berthed in San Diego since March this year or maybe earlier, there’s no detailed AIS record of her movements during last several years. She seems to be in a lay-up or used for some other than fishing and sailing purposes – no wonder, considering her antique age.

Barge sank after collision with bulk carrier, hampering traffic

Bulk carrier IVS NIGHTJAR collided with Vietnamese barge BV 1305 at around 0150 LT Sep 30 off Vung Tau, Vietnam, while en route from POSCO SS-Vina port, Vung Tau province. Barge sank, 8 people on board were rescued by SAR boat, no injures reported. Barge said to sank on or near fairway and is obstructing navigation, it has to be removed. No information on IVS NIGHTJAR damages and status, most probably she was brought to anchor for inspection and investigation.

Dutch cargo ferry damaged in collision, Antwerp

Cargo ro-ro ship GENCA collided with pier at Waasland, Antwerp, in the eveming Sep 29 while leaving port. GENCA suffered hull breach starboard, of some 70 cm length, above waterline. Vessel was allowed to resumed voyage, in the morning Sep 30 she left Antwerp, bound for Hanko, Finland.

Iranian freighter damaged by storm, sinking at Bandar Anzali, Caspian sea

Iranian freighter ORKIDEH 1 (former Russian STK 1018, river-sea type) in the evening Sep 29 was bashed against pier, by strong wind and waves, at Bandar Anzali port, Iran, Capsian sea. Vessel understood to be breached, started taking on water. Emergency rescue team managed to prevent sinking. No other information available.

Fire workers died during refloating of container ship, Jakarta

Five workers died in an attempt to refloat partially submerged ship SWEET ISTANBUL near Tanjung Priok breakwater, Jakarta, on Sep 29. According to available information, workers have been trying to install gas powdered pumps, it is said, that they died from poisoning after inhaling gas fumes. One worker went inside vessel and was lost, another one went after him and also was lost, then three more went inside, to find their death as well. Understood SWEET ISTANBUL was intentionally sunk outside harbor after fire or some other major accident in 2015, present attempt to refloat is a wreck removal operation.

Ghost cargo ship beached on Egypt coast, no one on board

Mysterious general cargo ship was found beached on Salloum coast, Egypt, Mediterranean sea, in the morning Oct 1, by locals. No crew on board, no information on crew’s fate or ship’s status. The ship is not yet identified. She’s resembling Russian river-sea type general cargo vessels, last letter in the name looks like M. Locals suspect mysterious ship could be involved in migrants trafficking.

Ibiza – Valencia ferry mishap

Ferry NAPOLES wasn’t able to disembark vehicles and passengers on arrival to Valencia from Ibiza, Spain, in the evening Sep 30, due to failed ramp. Later crew managed to install a ladder, some passengers left the ship but more than 100 people had to stay on board, because their cars were trapped. They spent a night on board, in the morning ramp was lowered with the help of two cranes, enabling all passengers and cars to disembark. Ferry resumed sailings on Ibiza – Valencia line.

Ghost ship identified but missing crew still a mystery

Ghost ship identified, thanks to Mr. David Hazell, who kindly sent to MB ship’s details – it’s general cargo ship MARIA M, IMO 7604843, dwt 1856, built 1979, present flag and owner unknown, last known flags Tanzania and St. Vincent, owner/manager NORSIA SHIPPING/BATOUL OSMAN. Last known AIS dated 2015, in Salloum area. Vessel doesn’t look like derelict and not in use for a long time, she looks like she’s in working condition. The rest of the story – where are the crew, what happened and what trade she was in, remains a mystery.

German container ship collided with Korean tanker, Japan sea

At 0423 Seoul time Oct 3 container ship VICTORIA TRADER collided with Korean 1345-ton chemical tanker on Onsan approaches, Ulsan, Korea, Japan sea. Both vessels, reportedly, were proceeding in the same direction, container ship struck or contacted tanker starboard cargo deck near midship. Both vessels suffered damages, said to be slight. Tanker suffered dented rails and maybe some other damages, container ship sustained portside bow damage, see pics. VICTORIA TRADER berthed at Onsan, Ulsan (understood according to schedule), tanker also was taken to Ulsan, whereabouts unknown.
I received accident information from my Korean correspondent, he wasn’t able to identify tanker. Korean maritime authorities and media don’t identify ships involved in accidents in Korean waters, it’s a rule. When they post photos, they smudge ships’ names.

Vietnamese tanker collided with Taiwan Navy destroyer, both damaged

Product tanker EVERRICH 3 collided with ROC Navy destroyer ROCS Tso Ying (DDG-1803) at around 0900 LT Oct 3 at Kaohsiung Harbor, Taiwan, while leaving port. Tanker struck destroyer’s portside transom stern, inflicting deep dent and breach, tanker’s bow also sustained dent and probably, breach. Tanker was detained, for survey and most probably, investigation. According to AIS and EQUASIS, tanker is Vietnamese.
ROCS Tso Ying, formerly USS Kidd, built 1979, acquired by ROC in 2003, displacement 7289, armament missiles, guns, torpedoes, helicopters.

Capesize bulk carrier grounding in Suez, bottom breach. Prev news CORRECTION

According to the inside information, capesize EASTERN BUND suffered blackout and ran aground, suffering bottom hull breach, but she has double bottom, so understood there’s no water ingress. Bulk carrier said to be under tow to Suez. HAPPY DELTA didn’t suffer any trouble.

General cargo vessel reportedly was disabled at around noon Oct 4 while transiting Suez Canal in southern direction, above Bitter Lakes. Vessel was immediately assisted by Canal tugs and towed to Bitter Lakes. Vessel suffered a blackout, said GAG. Not other information was available. According to AIS tracks, most probably, vessels in question is HAPPY DELTA, at 1320 UTC Oct 4 she was in Bitter Lakes, moving south at some 2 knots speed, and looking like she’s under tow. Traffic wasn’t affected.

Brightoil’s tanker sunk Chinese fishing vessel, 12 missing, Japan sea

Brightoil’s aframax tanker BRIGHTOIL LUCKY collided with Chinese 290-ton fishing vessel at around 0930 Tokyo time Oct 5, in Japan sea, some 200 nm north of Oki islands, Shimane Prefecture. 16-crew fishing vessel sank, 4 fishermen understood to be rescued, 12 went missing. Japanese Coast Guard launched SAR and sent three patrol boats to collision site. BRIGHTOIL LUCKY is en route from Longkou China to Kozmino oil terminal, Russia, Primorye Region, Japan sea.

General cargo vessel KM KTC 1 ran aground early in the morning, at around 0005 LT Oct 5, north of Karang Jamuang island, north of Surabaya, in position 06 53S 112 44E, reportedly hitting underwater rock. Vessel was breached, list developed, 16 crew said to be evacuated. Vessel with cargo of (reportedly) limestone was en route to Perawang, Pekanbaru, Central Sumatra, Malacca Strait.
