Bulk carrier troubled in Atlantic, taken on tow in Indian ocean

Bulk carrier TINA reportedly suffered engine failure on Sep 13 in Indian ocean off South Africa, while en route from Rio Grande Brazil to Singapore. According to AIS track, she encountered engine problems since Sep 3 in the Atlantic, managed to sail to Indian ocean and from Sep 9 until Sep 13 was moving in legs at minimal speed off East London, SAR. On Sep 13 she was taken on tow by offshore supply tug PACIFIC DILIGENCE (IMO 9631395), to be towed to Durban. As of 1130 UTC Sep 14, both vessels were in vicinity 32 45S 028 59E, destination Durban, speed some 3 knots.

Explosion inside gun mount on board of Russian Navy Big Landing Craft

Vladivostok (Russian Far East major port and Naval Base) news outlets on June 14 published news on an accident, which took place on board of Big Landing Craft OSLYABYA during test firing, in Konyushkovo Bay, Primorye. According to media reports, referring to Navy sources, it was an explosion in gun mount, no other details were given. But on Sep 14 some news outlets published a photo which presumably, was recently posted in social net by a witness, seaman who managed to take a pic of an explosion. Explosion occurred inside a 57-milimeter AK-725 gun mount. No other details available (and won’t be available, considering the character of Russian Navy, its’ Command, and their utter inability to acknowledge accidents and even tragedies, until caught red-handed). It is said, that there were casualties.

Sep 15 morning Update: Tanker’s condition unknown, seems like she was refloated and berthed.
Sep 14:Tanker ASTRAL EXPRESS in the morning Sep 14 ran aground in Karnaphuli river, Chittagong, while maneuvering to dock at oil jetty, with 27000 tons of diesel fuel on board. Tanker’s cargo is to be lightered into barges, traffic in Channel said to be not affected. Officials said they plan to refloat vessel in the afternoon Sep 14, with high tide.

General cargo ship ANNETTA reportedly ran aground while approaching Zonguldak Port, Turkey, at around 0330 UTC Sep 15, about a mile north of port’s entrance. No other information available at the moment, accident isn’t confirmed by other sources yet. Vessel arrived from Novorossiysk, Russia.

Tug SEVASTOPOLETS allided with cruise ship KNYAZ (PRINCE) VLADIMIR at 0650 Moscow time Sep 14 at Sevastopol port during mooring operation. Tug’s stern struck bulbous nose of cruise ship, inflicting dent and a crack. No information on repairs and changes in ship’s itinerary, on Sep 15 the ship sailed from Novorossiysk to Sochi, Russian Black sea. Tank containers with nitric acid damaged in storm

Container ship DONG FANG FU while en route from Shanghai to Taichung port, Taiwan, was caught in rough weather in East China sea, 6 tank containers with nitric acid shifted and were battered in severe pitch and roll. Container ship changed course and arrived at Keelung port at night Sep 14. She was berthed, early in the morning crew smelled acid smell and immediately alerted authorities. Chemical factory technicians were called, to treat leakage. No injures reported, acid didn’t leak overboard, DONG FANG FU sailed from Keelung on Sep 15, bound for Taichung. Understood tank containers are to be offloaded in Taichung, with following thorough clean up.

Bulk carrier grounded in Greek waters

Bulk carrier ELENA TOPIC ran aground in Thermaic Gulf, Aegean sea, in the evening Sep 15, shortly after leaving Thessaloniki port, Greece. Bulk carrier loaded with cement, bound for Ivory Coast, was refloated some 2 hours after grounding, with the help of 5 tugs. She was taken back to Thessaloniki and berthed, reportedly detained for a thorough check and investigation. No leak reported.

Albanian freighter seized by Libyan military

General cargo ship ENVI 1 was intercepted by Libyan Coast Guard on Sep 15 off Zawya, for allegedly, illegal transportation of construction materials, including sand, which were loaded at Zawya port. As of 0700 UTC Sep 16, the ship was either adrift or anchored off Zawya. Eight crew included five Albanian and three Montenegro nationalities.

Container ship APL CALIFORNIA broke off her moorings in strong wind at around 0300 LT Sep 16 at Koper Port, Slovenia, Adriatic sea. Understood aft moorings broke, while fore lines hold fast, so vessel’s stern moved around and struck another docked vessel, and a tug. Two tugs brought APL CALIFORNIA back to pier – as can be seen on photo, stern lines made fast to mooring buoys. No detailed information on damages, officials said, that there were no major damages. Sep 17 Update: As of 0730 UTC bulk carrier reported still aground, with 6 tugs and pilot boat at her side and nearby. No other information yet.
Bulk carrier PAN CROCUS ran aground in Persian Gulf while approaching port of destination Mesaieed, Qatar, early in the morning Sep 17, under unclear circumstances. Four port tugs were at her side at 0600 UTC Sep 17, apparently in refloating attempts. No information on damages yet.

Swedish cargo ship oil spill in Kiel

Ro-ro cargo ship SCA OSTRAND suffered hydraulic oil spill on board, some oil leaked overboard on Sep 16, at Kiel port, Germany. Ship’s crew immediately activated anti-pollution plan and alerted authorities, the ship was fenced off with booms. Oil spill occurred at around 1245 LT, by 1700 LT clean-up operation was completed. SCA OSTRAND departed from Kiel, bound for Malmo.

SCF tanker spilled oil at Santos, Brazil

An unknown quantity of diesel oil was spilled during offloading of tanker NS STELLA at Ilha Barnabe Oil Terminal, Santos, Brazil, in the evening Sep 16. Faulty valve said to be the cause of an accident, oil was pouring into harbor waters for some ten minutes. Clean-up is underway, together with investigation. On Sep 18 authorities are to name culprits and determine sum of fine.

Passenger ship disabled, adrift south of Singapore

Passenger ship DUMAI LINE 5 on Sep 17 was disabled after engine failure near Pulau Burung island, south of Singapore, with some 90 passengers on board, while en route from Batam to Dumai, Malacca Strait. According to latest news, as of night Sep 17 vessel was adrift off Pulau Burung, no reports on emergency towage or passengers evacuation. Understood clogged fuel pipe caused engine failure. Vessel laying dead in the water in rough seas, passengers said to suffer from sea-sickness.

Container ship MSC SANDRA collided with pier at Bremerhaven port in the morning Sep 17, during unmooring maneuver, cause unknown, though it is said, that it was foggy at the time of an accident. Portside transom stern was breached or heavily dented above waterline. Vessel was taken back to berth. as of 1630 UTC Sep 17, MSC SANDRA was still berthed at Bremerhaven.

Passenger ship sank, 27 people on board rescued, Indonesia

Contacts were lost with coastal passenger ship FUNGKA PERMATA III on Sep 17, ship sailed from Bau Bau, Pulau Buton Island, Southern Sulawesi Regency, Indonesia, Banda sea, with 27 (20 passengers and 7 crew) people on board. Sinking ship was spotted on Sep 18 by locals off Buton Selatan, southernmost Pulau Buton. All people on board were rescued by fishermen, including foreign tourist or tourists. FUNGKA PERMATA III was bound for Tomia island, Wakatobi Dive Resort. Small passenger ship was caught in heavy swell and started taking on water, sinking by stern. Understood FUNGKA PERMATA III sank. No data found on FUNGKA PERMATA III, which is hardly surprising, if on the photo below is FUNGKA PERMATA III.

Container ship TOKYO TOWER was reported aground by a witness from a ship anchored nearby, who overheard VHF talks, but he isn’t sure. Marinetraffic.com mark TOKYO TOWER as “Aground”, on outer Shanghai Anchorage since 1440 UTC Sep 18, on arrival from HK to Shanghai.

Sep 20 Update: Vessel resumed sailing at normal speed at around 2030 UTC, and moved to recommended lane in traffic separation zone.
Capesize bulk carrier PETALON spotted disabled or hampered in English Channel south of Plymouth, since 1330 UTC Sep 19. Vessel made a full circle while reducing speed, since 1430 UTC is moving in northeast direction (on an opposite direction lane) at some 2 knots, condition and status unknown. PETALON is en route from Sept-Iles Canada to Ghent Belgium.

General cargo vessel VITA suffered engine failure on Sep 19 in Celtic sea north of Ushant, while en route from Bremen Germany to Puerto de Pasajes Spain with 3500 tons of steel on board. SAR ship ABEILLE BOURBON (IMO 9308687) was sent to assist, in the evening Sep 19 VITA was taken on tow to be towed to Brest, ETA Sep 20. At 0500 UTC Sep 20 caravan was some 20 nm off Brest.

Tanker collided with bulk carrier, grounded, Bath Western Scheldt – again

Bulk carrier USOLIE collided with tanker SEATROUT on Western Scheldt at hapless Bath meander (ULCS CSCL JUPITER grounding Aug 14), at around 0330 UTC Sep 20, while both vessels were proceeding in the same direction downstream. Tanker grounded after collision, either pushed by jolt or while trying to avoid collision. Reportedly, there are no visible damages, tanker is to be refloated at high tide, several tugs are at her side already. Bulk carrier sailed downstream and was brought to anchor at Vlissingen. Cargo ship and tanker collided in Azov sea

MRCC Moscow: Cargo ship VELES collided with tanker VOLGONEFT-210 in Azov-Don Sea Canal in buoys 20-21 area at 0620 Moscow time Sep 19, in restricted visibility. Both vessels were under way, with pilots on board. VELES with 3003 tons of wheat on board suffered damaged bulwark at 6 meters length, and cargo deck bloating. Both vessels were ordered to move to Rostov-on-Don, for inspection and investigation. No information on tanker’s damages, but no leak was reported.
