Freighter collided with fishing vessel, rescued crew, East China sea

Freighter collided with Korean 9-ton fishing vessel some 25 nm southeast Seoqwipo, southern Jeju Island, Korea, in the afternoon July 1. Fishing vessel sank, 6 crew were rescued, understood by freighter. One of rescued was injured, in need of urgent hospitalization, he was airlifted by helicopter, but died in a hospital. Name of the vessel wasn’t revealed, according to available information (to be confirmed) it’s TONG MAO 1, which is en route from Qingdao China to Yatsushiro Japan.

Tanker CHEMROAD JOURNEY refloated Update July 03

July 3: Tanker was refloated on July 2, after some 8000 tons of tanker’s cargo, chemicals, were siphoned to tanker SUN MERCURY (IMO 9291444), by joint efforts of salvage tugs and SAR ships. No spill reported. According to AIS track, CHEMROAD JOURNEY is under tow, but destination yet unclear. Chinese freighter sank in Gulf of Tonkin

General cargo vessel XINBAOTAI 1 with 3250 tons of ore on board in the afternoon July 3 ran on rocks on northeast coast of Weizhou island, Guangxi province, South China, Gulf of Tonkin. Crew went into lifeboat and safely reached island’s coast. Vessel reportedly sank, though she may be resting on the bottom, partially above water.

General cargo vessel SHUYA ran aground in Elbe estuary, northwest of Cuxhaven, in the evening July 3, with 4000 tons of salt on board, bound for Fredericia, Denmark. Vessel ran aground shortly after pilot boarded her. So far, all attempts to refloat SHUYA failed, as of 1330 UTC July 4 she’s still aground. No reports on damages. Salvage under way, coordinated by Cuxhaven maritime authorities.
On Apr 18 this year, SHUYA allided with quay and a Dutch vessel while sifting berth at Brake, Weser.

Laker GREAT REPUBLIC accident, Cleveland

Laker GREAT REPUBLIC in the evening July 2 contacted dock of Shooters on the Water (venue offering a long menu of familiar fare & a patio showing a sound & light show) Cleveland, Ohio, and leisure boat, which was moored in prohibited area. Laker and boat didn’t suffer any damages, but Shooters on the Water is said to sustain some damages. Coastal freighter with 13 people missing in Caribbean

Small coastal freighter MISS JOHANA BETSEY with 13 people on board is missing in Caribbean, off Nicaragua coast, since June 29, said officials on July 4. Last contact is dated June 29, in Corn Islands area, east of Bluefields, South Caribbean Autonomous Region in Nicaragua. Vessel had EPIRB on board, but it wasn’t activated, no distress signal issued by other means. Waters in the area are heavily trafficked, but there are no alert messages from passing vessels. SAR was launched by Nicaragua authorities, deploying Navy ships.

Water tanker AEGINA collided with small fishing vessel PANAGIOTIS in the morning July 5 north some 2.5 nm northwest of Souvala, northern Aegina island, Saronic Gulf, Greece. Fishing vessel sank, two fishermen on board died, their bodies were recovered by AEGINA. Tanker has been ordered to sail to port of Aegina, Aegina Island, and was detained on arrival, for investigation.

Argentine Navy destroyer damaged in collision

Argentine Navy destroyer ARA D-11 La Argentina collided with pier at Punta Alta Navy Base, south of Buenos Aires, on June 30, while leaving the Base to join an international naval exercise in the Pacific. The ship suffered bow damage, later during wielding works fire broke out, understood without serious consequences. La Argentina said to leave Base after completing repairs. Captain of Italian tanker died on board, Durban

Product tanker FREIGHT MARGIE, anchored at Durban Anchorage, South Africa, requested medical assistance in the morning July 6, after tanker’s Captain collapsed unconscious. NSRI launched rescue boat, which delivered to tanker paramedics team. Paramedics declared Captain of Italian nationality dead, heart attack suspected. Body of the Captain was taken ashore for forensics. Later that day tanker berthed at Durban port.

ARGENT COSMOS refloated, Columbia river

Chemical tanker ARGENT COSMOS, loaded with ethanol and monoethylene glycol, ran aground at 0628 LT July 6 in the Columbia River near Skamokawa, Wash., some 30 miles downstream from Longview,while en route from Clatskanie Oregon to China. Tanker was refloated with the incoming tide at 1415 LT, with coming tide and tugs assistance, and taken upstream to Longview, apparently for safety check. No leak, no damages reported. As of 0300 UTC July 7, tanker was still berthed at Longview.

Laker fire, Lake Huron

Fire erupted in a galley located in stern superstructure of a laker OJIBWAY, berthed at Sarnia, Lake Huron, Canada. Sarnia and Point Edward firefighters were alerted at 1637 LT July 6, more than 20 firefighters were engaged. Fire was quickly extinguished, damages inflicted by fire said to be substantial. Several firefighters were injured, one taken to hospital, 29 crew reported unharmed.

Container ship APL JEDDAH lost power at around 0630 CST July 7, while leaving Kaohsiung Port, Taiwan, with pilot on board. Vessel struck pier No.58, inflicting serious damages both on pier and vessel’s bulbous nose. Vessel was taken to berth for damages check and damages cost evaluation. LPG tanker collided with oil tanker off Ulsan, Japan sea

LPG tanker BUENA REINA collided with product tanker KEUNSUL 3 on Ulsan outer anchorage, Korea, Japan sea, at night local time July 7, while proceeding in opposite directions. KEUNSUL 3 was approaching Ulsan, BUENA REINA was leaving port. Understood Korean tanker struck LPG tanker, inflicting portside aft damages. KEUNSUL 3 suffered fore damages, proceeded to port and moored in the morning July 8, while BUENA REINA was brought to anchor near collision site. One Filipino crew of LPG tanker was injured and received medical treatment. No leak reported.
As of 0500 UTC July 8, KEUNSUL 3 was berthed at Ulsan port, BUENA REINA was at anchor.
Negligence of both ships’ watches is said to be the cause of an accident.

Disabled bulk carrier under tow, Indian ocean UPDATE

July 9: Caravan is proceeding in eastern direction, south of Reunion, destination Port Louis Mauritius, ETA July 10.
July 8: Bulk carrier IRIS II suffered engine failure while en route from South Africa to Qasim, Pakistan, on July 3, some 140 nm west of Reunion island, Indian ocean. Five Oceans Salvage was contracted for towage, offshore supply tug IONIAN SEA FOS sailed from Port Louis, Mauritius, and took disabled bulker on tow on July 6. IRIS II is to be towed to Port Louis, on July 7 caravan was moving in eastern direction at some 4 knots speed.

Chinese frigate said to be disabled, drifting in Indian ocean

Online news outlet East Pendulum said Chinese Type 052D frigate DDG-173 CHANGSHA broke down in Indian ocean while en route to Baltic sea, to take part in joint China-Russia naval exercise Joint Sea 2017. East Pendulum is referring to an anonymous China military source. CHANGSHA, according to East Pendulum, suffered propulsion failure and is drifting since at least June 26, with replenishment ship LUOMAHU (Qiandaohu-class or Type 903, displacement 23.400) nearby. A Chinese squadron to take part in Baltic sea exercises (which exercises already stirred some fears in Baltic States – Voytenko Mikhail), therefore, is reduced to frigates Hefei and Yuncheng only.

Bulk carrier struck tanker causing fire, Yangtze

Sailing upstream bulk carrier TIAN SHENG 18 struck product tanker SHUANG LONG HAI, which was berthed at Petrochemical Terminal in Changzhou, Yangtze river, in the evening July 9. Tanker suffered hull damages, cargo pipe broke up, with ensuing fire. Tanker’s 15 crew left the vessel, understood hull was breached, but no danger of sinking. By morning July 10 fire said to be extinguished, tanker stabilized, situation reported to be under control, tanker’s AIS is on. Oil booms were placed around tanker and terminal berth.

Tuna longliner HSIANG FUH 6 sank on July 8 some 350 nm east of Richards Bay, South Africa, Indian ocean. All 30 crew were rescued by nearby merchant ships: container ship EVER DIADEM (IMO 9134270) rescued 16 people, bulk carrier SBI ANTARES (IMO 9705299) rescued 14 people, all are to be disembarked at Durban. Fishermen were rescued on July 9, understood they’ve been picked up from life boat or rafts. Cause of sinking unknown.

July 12 Update: HSIANG FUH 6 suffered fire, crew went into life rafts and later were rescued by merchant vessels, see below. Abandoned vessel reportedly remained afloat, drifting.
Two of the crew suffered injures, one of them reported by NSRI as having severe burns of 2 and 3 degrees. Container ship KEA TRADER grounded on reef east of Noumea

Brand new container ship KEA TRADER in the afternoon July 11 ran aground in position 22 02 S 168 38 E, Durand reef, 135 nm east of Noumea, while en route from Papeete to Noumea. No reports on leak, officials said no leak risk, according to Radio New Zealand. As of 0700 UTC July 12, vessel was still aground. No news on salvage yet.

​NGI’s ferry carrying hazmat disabled by fire, Italy

Fire erupted in engine room of Italian NGI ferry BRIDGE in the afternoon July 11 some 4 nm east of Filicudi Island, northeast of Sicily. SAR boats were deployed, firefighting team boarded the ship, fire was extinguished. Vessel was disabled by fire, and had to be towed to Messina, arriving there in the morning July 12. Hazardous materials (nuclear substances mentioned) said to be transported on board, vessel was attended to in Messina with all necessary precautions.
