Russian cargo ship AMUR collided with Chinese cargo ship XIN LIN HAI 6 at around 1600 UTC Sep 28 while leaving Shanghai in Yangtze estuary, and was brought to anchor near grounding site. Later the ship was ordered to move to inner anchorage in Changxing area. As of 1530 UTC Sep 29, the ship was in the same position. XIN LIN HAI 6, according to AIS, is also at anchor further offshore. No information on damages yet, but according to MRCC Moscow report, there’s no hull breach, no leak.

Bunker tanker ERATO collided with anchored container ship ERATO in Piraeus Anchorage in the afternoon Sep 29, understood while mooring alongside for bunkering. Both ships sustained slight damages, but according to local sources, there were no breaches and leak.

Lighter sank being hit by bulk carrier Update
Sep 30: According to latest local updates, NEW LEGACY was contacted or struck by bulk carrier DENSA TIGER, which was also undergoing cargo operation with lighter or lighters alongside. Under the impact, NEW LEGACY struck lighter CHAR SAMAIL. Both bulk carriers said to be damaged.
Sep 29: Lighter vessel CHAR SAMAIL sank while unmooring from bulk carrier NEW LEGACY on Sep 29 on Chittagong Anchorage, under unclear circumstances. Understood lighter vessel loaded 400 tons of scrap from bulk carrier, there were other two lighter vessels moored alongside bulk carrier, vessel in question was struck either by another lighter or by by carrier. Of 13 crew on board, 9 were rescued, 4 went missing.

Typhoon Trami beached cargo ship, Kawasaki Video
General cargo ship MARINA was pushed by passing typhoon Trami on breakwater of Kawasaki port, Greater Tokyo, at around 0200 Tokyo time Oct 1, and as of 1400 Tokyo time, was still aground. 12 crew left the ship and get to the shore, no injures reported. Understood hull breached, leak probable. According to track, the ship was anchored, anchor dragged, the ship tried to hold on but couldn’t make it, and drifted on breakwater.

Cement carrier disabled, waiting for tug, Aegean sea
Cement carrier SIRIOS CEMENT IV suffered mechanical failure and started to drift in Aegean sea northeast of Tinos island at around 0300 UTC Oct 1. vessel is ballasting from Haifa to Volos, mainland Greece. Tug was sent or contracted to assist, understood it’s DIMITROS V (MMSI 237108200). As of 1330 UTC SIRIOS CEMENT V was still drifting in SSE direction at some 1-1.5 knots speed.

Ferry REGINA SEAWAYS accident under control, ferry under way
Ferry REGINA SEAWAYS suffered an unclear kind of trouble in engine room in Baltcis sea while en route from Kiel to Klaipeda Lithuania, being southeast of Bornholm, at around 1340 LT Oct 2. What happened exactly, isn’t clear, probably explosion in engine room, alarm was set off in engine room, firefighting system was activated, ferry was disabled and probably, suffered a blackout – the ship went off AIS monitors at around 0430 UTC and reappeared at around 1530 UTC, being under way again, at a reduced speed of 14 knots, heading for port of destination Klaipeda. Ferry is escorted by at least 2 tugs and approaching Klaipeda.
There are or were 335 passengers on board, some updates said passengers were evacuated, but official statements and situation in general tell otherwise, most probably they all remain on board. According to official statement, there was no fire, explosion also isn’t mentioned, alarm, activated firefighting system and sealed engine room (meaning engines were stopped) were the result of a dense smoke, cause by some malfunction.
As of 1620 UTC Oct 2, situation looks to be under control, ferry sailing under own power, no injures and no damages were reported so far. Hopefully the story is over.

Cargo ship distressed in the middle of the Atlantic
Cargo ship ALTA requested assistance on Oct 1 in position 24 13N 043 48W, in the middle of the Atlantic, some 1500 nm west of African coast, 1100 nm east of Caribbean. The ship is disabled since Sep 19, drifting or slowly moving on north direction. She’s en route from Greece to Haiti, ETA Sep 27. The ship changed owner in late 2017.

Container ship abandoned, adrift Update sank, Taiwan
Oct 3 Update: YING HAI sank in the morning Oct 3 in position 22 45N 119 10E, south of Penghu Archipelago, Taiwan, Taiwan Strait. Navigational warning issued, on floating containers danger to navigation in the area.
Oct 2: Cargo ship YING HAI loaded with containers developed heavy starboard list in Penghu archipelago waters, Taiwan Strait, southern Taiwan, in the morning Oct 2. Taiwan SAR Agency was alerted at 1000 LT (UTC +8), SAR was launched. The ship developed list after several containers shifted, some went overboard, in rough sea conditions. All 9 crew went to SAR boats after attempts to take YING HAI on tow failed, and list meanwhile, increased to 30 degrees. The ship was en route from Kaohsiung to Busan Korea, latest updates said she’s drifting with heavy list, no determined salvage plan yet.

Cargo ship and tanker seriously damaged in collision, river Don
Product tanker GLORIA and cargo ship VOLGO-DON 147 collided on river Don near Bagaevskaya village, assumedly at night Oct 2. Ships were moving in opposite directions, tanker was sailing upstream (most probably in ballast), while cargo ship, loaded with 4300 tons of barley, was sailing downstream, bound for Kavkaz port, Kerch Strait. Both ship sustained considerable damages. VOLGO-DON 147 suffered forecastle damages up to windlass, which is inoperable, also hull breaches, water ingress reported. Tanker sustained heavy bow stern damage and hull breaches in bow area, with ensuing water ingress. Both ships understood to be brought to anchor near collision site.

Ghost ship sank, Myanmar
Container ship SAM RATULANGI, which on Aug 27 drifted ashore some 7 nm off Thongwa, Gulf of Mataban, Myanmar, while being under tow to a shipbreaking yard, sank, said Myanmar Maritime Authorities on Oct 3. The ship remains above waterline, as can be seen on photo, she is resting on bottom. Maritime Authorities ordered wreck removal from shipowner.
The ship was Indonesia-flagged, owned by PT DJAKARTA LLOYD (PERSERO), Jakarta. She was sold to PT Mandara Putra Bajatama and then re-sold to SMIT Salvage Singapore, to be dismantled at Bangladesh break yard.

Taiwanese coaster damaged in hit and run
General cargo ship SAM BO II collided with unidentified cargo ship, at around 0530 LT Oct 5 south of Penghu island’s Lungmen Harbor. SAM BO II sustained serious damages in portside bow area, including huge dents and probably breaches, and lost anchor. The ship was able to reach her destination, Lungmen Harbor, under own power. SAM BO II was loaded with merchandise, she’s a cargo shuttle connecting Penghu islands with mainland Taiwan. Freighter which struck SAM BO II didn’t stop and sail away, Taiwanese CG said that most probably, it’s a Panama-flagged 20,000-ton cargo ship, no other details given. Investigation under way.

General cargo ship aground in Swedish waters
General cargo ship GRIFTBOR ran aground shortly after leaving Hargshamn, Sweden, at around 2330 UTC Oct 5, while en route to Stockholm. At 0730 UTC Oct 6 vessel was still aground with tug at her side. GRIFTBOR according to track, veered off fairway and ran aground at some 4-5 knots speed, she’s probably hard aground. No leak reported, blackout said to be the cause of an accident.

Fish factory disabled in Japan sea
Fish factory ALTAIR was disabled in the morning Oct 7 in northern Japan sea, while under way to Primorye, Russia, Japan sea. According to MRCC Moscow report, fishing vessel was to be taken on tow by another fishing vessel, to be towed to Preobrazheniya Bay, southern Primorye.

Ferry struck container ship and remained stuck to avoid disaster, France
Container ship CSL VIRGINIA, which was anchored north of Cap Corse, northern Corsica peninsula, France, Tyrrhenian sea, since late September, was struck by Tunisian ferry ULYSSE, which was en route from Genoa Italy to Tunis Tunisia, at around 0600 UTC Oct 7. Understood container ship was/is in a lay-up and wasn’t under way at the time of collision, i.e. ferry is solely to blame for collision. Container ship suffered a several meters hull breach, starboard. No reports on ferry damages, but ferry’s bow no doubt, sustained damages, probably serious. As of 1330 UTC, ULYSSE was according to track, still stuck to CSL VIRGINIA, with tug nearby. Most probably, ULYSSE is kept in this position, because container ship will be flooded through big hole in a short time, if ULYSSE is taken away – ULYSSE is, for the time being, sealing the hole.

Cargo ship sank after collision with fishing vessel, China
Cargo ship CHANG SHENG 3 collided with fishing boat in Zhoushan waters, east of Ningbo, China, East China sea, at around 1500 LT Oct 6. Fishing boat struck cargo ship portside in cargo holds area, CHANG SHENG 3 hull sustained a breach or breaches, and started to sink. All 11 crew went on board of another fishing boat which was nearby, all are safe. CHANG SHENG 3 sank in about an hour after collision. Judging from photos, she was in full load.

Container ship accident in Manchester Channel
Container ship RMS VERITAS reportedly allided with canal structure in Manchester Ship Channel early in the morning Oct 7, while approaching Irlam, Manchester. There was a dense fog at the time of an accident. No information on damages, the ship was to be surveyed by divers on Oct 8. As of afternoon Oct 8, RMS VERITAS was berthed at Irlam.

Tanker disabled by fire, towed to New York
Asphalt tanker FENG HUANG AO suffered fire in engine room in the morning Oct 5 off Nantucket island, New England, USA, while en route Antwerp to New York with cargo of asphalt, said USCG on Oct 8. Fire was extinguished by activated fire suppression system, there were no injures to crew, but tanker was disabled. Tug was arranged, tanker was taken on tow on Oct 5 and towed to New York, arriving there on Oct 8.

Update: Ferry struck container ship off the coast of island of Corsica
In the early morning of October 7, 2018, a ferry collided with a container ship in the Ligurian Sea off the coast of the French island of Corsica. A 20-kilometer oil spill in the Mediterranean Sea resulted. No injuries have been reported to date. The reason for the collision is still unclear.
The CSL Virginia, a container ship about 300 meters long, has been anchored in the north of the island of Corsica since September 25, 2018. It was temporarily out of service and awaiting further instructions. At approximately 0500 UTC on Sunday, the Tunisian roll-on roll-off ferry Ulysse collided with the stationary Cypriot container ship. The 162 meter long ferry Ulysse had just started its journey from Genoa to Tunis.

Explosion and fire on bunker tanker, S-Petersburg
Boiler exploded in engine room of bunker tanker KEILA, moored alongside reefer BALTIC PEARL, which is docked at S-Petersburg port, Russia, at 0730 Moscow time Oct 9. Explosion was followed by fire in funnel area. at the time of an accident, reefer was receiving bunker fuel from tanker. Fire was extinguished by tanker and reefer crews, no injures reported.
