Russian Master of Dutch freighter RUYTER found guilty, fined

General cargo ship RUYTER ran aground at around 2230 LT Oct 10 on the north coast of Rathlin Island, north of Northern Ireland, while en route from Lomonosov Russia to Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland. The ship managed to refloat by own means, reported no damages, and continued voyage, arriving at Warrentpoint at 1330 LT Oct 11. On arrival bow tilt and list were visible, inspection was carried out, finding extensive underwater hull damages, bow thruster compartment, double bottom and forepeak tanks flooded.
Ship’s captain Aleksandr Iakovtsov of Russian nationality has been fined £1,000 ($1,300) at Armagh Magistrates' Court after pleading guilty faulty navigation.
