Car carrier NEPTUNE THELISIS hit coal conveyer belt and crane at Koper port, Slovenia, Adriatic sea, in the evening June 7. Crane collapsed and said to be totally destroyed. Car carrier reportedly, suffered slight damages. It is not clear how exactly did it happen. According to reports, vessel broke off her head moorings, turned around her stern, and hit the crane, when storm battered Koper port.
According to port’s scheme, and disposition of coal terminal berth and ro-ro berth, it can not be so - NEPTUNE THELISIS was docked at ro-ro berth, made fast stern, hull perpendicular to berth, with both anchors dropped (confirmed by local media report). It should be the stern, which broke free and hit the crane. Reportedly, Master asked for tugs to prevent possible accident, but they weren’t delivered, or were late.
According to local reports, ship owners regularly complain on risks involved with docking at that basin in Koper port, but to no avail. Local media mention two previous, similar accidents. Estimated loss of this latest accident said to be some 15-20 mil euro. Investigation is to be carried out, probably by third party, to establish responsibility of port authorities and the vessel. Reportedly, ship owner already claimed to be innocent.
