Ferry fire, Sunda Strait

Fire erupted on board of ferry BSP 1 at around 1845 WIB time (UTC +7) Feb 7, when the ship on Bakauheni – Merak service (Sunda Strait, Sumatra – Java) was approaching Merak, being some 3 nm off Merak Besar island. There were 196 passengers and 26 crew on board. Fire said to start in engine room, with smoke billowing from engine room and frightening passengers. They were told to con in lifejackets, nearby ferries and tugs were directed to assist troubled ferry. All passengers were evacuated, BSP 1 reportedly, managed, with tugs assistance, reach Merak, at 2030 WIB. Fire reportedly, was extinguished.
