Sep 7 Update: As of Sep 7, WAN HAI 502 is still aground, salvage under way. The ship has to be lightered, operation hampered by adverse weather. No leak reported yet, but it’s highly probable, considering grounding site, reef, and circumstances – the ship ran on reef while sailing full speed. According to chart, there was enough depth for safe navigation. The ship ran aground at around 2200 LT Aug 30.
Sep 3: Container ship WAN HAI 502 aground in South China Sea in position 01 13S 106 50E, Karimata Strait, since late Aug 30 or early Aug 31. Reportedly she’s hard aground, salvage company not nominated yet. WAN HAI 502 is en route from Singapore to Jakarta.
