Cruise ship MARELLA DISCOVERY 2 was disabled after engine failure, while moving in Guidecca Canal, Venice historic center, near Doge's Palace and the Basilica of San Marco, in the afternoon May 14. In about half an hour three tugs took cruise ship under control and she was berthed at passenger terminal. According to track, cruise ship was leaving Venice, bound for Split. As of 0700 UTC May 15, MARELLA DISCOVERY 2 was still at Venice.
This latest accident revitalized protests against big ships navigation in Venice downtown. The No Large Ships Committee is set to emergency meeting in early June, to attempt once again to impose ban on all large ships navigation in historic area.
