The chemical compound, flammable propyl acetate, spilled from a container tank on board of container ship HARBOUR BRIDGE, berthed at Long Beach Port, Ca., at about 0930 LT Aug 6. A hazardous materials unit, a search-and-rescue unit and paramedics were dispatched to the scene. Two Long Beach fire boats and one of the city’s lifeguard rescue boats deployed a 1,000-foot boom in the water alongside the docked ship as a precautionary measure against environmental damage. Twelve crew said to suffer minor injures, one crew and one firefighter were directly exposed to noxious substance and its’ fumes, and had to be hospitalized. Leaking container was offloaded.
