USS Antietam ran aground and damaged its propellers in Tokyo Bay near Tokyo on Jan 30, the Navy said on Jan 31. The ship returned to Yokosuka Naval Base, assisted by two tugs. Some 4 tons of hydraulic oil leaked in to bay. Grounding was caused, according to officials, by a mechanical issue, not by navigational or commanding errors. Cruiser was anchored, anchor dragged, and while trying to heave anchor and move to safer waters, the ship’s propeller or both propellers touched bottom.
